The undergraduate biology program at UCSB is collaboratively managed by two departments: Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology (EEMB) and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB). Both departments provide multiple focused majors culminating in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), while also offering a shared general biological sciences major available as either a B.S. or B.A. degree. Academic and research initiatives span the entire scope of biological disciplines, from biochemistry and molecular studies to ecological systems and community dynamics. Students can choose from more than 150 advanced biology courses, featuring classroom instruction, hands-on lab and fieldwork, as well as independent and collaborative research opportunities.
The Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology Department (EEMB) provides B.S. degrees in four specialized areas: aquatic biology, ecology and evolution, physiology, and zoology. It also partners with the Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology Department to deliver an interdisciplinary biological sciences major with both B.A. and B.S. options. Graduate programs are available, leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees with concentrations in ecology, evolution, and marine biology. Additionally, undergraduates from any discipline can enroll in diverse elective courses or use them to supplement their degree requirements in other departments.
