The Core Philosophy Track caters to students who have a broad interest in philosophical studies, as well as those planning to pursue advanced degrees. To prepare for the major, students must complete either Critical Thinking (Philosophy 3) or Beginning Modern Logic (Philosophy 183). Upper Division Major requirements consist of two components: three courses in key philosophical disciplines (Ethics, Theory of Knowledge, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, and Metaphysics) and three courses focused on influential individual philosophers.
Philosophy cultivates precise and methodical thinking. The major strengthens analytical abilities, making it valuable for numerous professions that demand these skills or as a foundational liberal arts education. Two specialized tracks address diverse student goals and highlight philosophy's dual focus. (1) The Core Philosophy concentration provides comprehensive training, ideal for developing reasoning skills, mastering the discipline, or preparing for graduate school. (2) The Ethics and Public Policy concentration examines moral and legal challenges in society and professional ethics, tailored for students pursuing careers in law, government, healthcare, or related fields.
