The Environmental Studies (ES) program equips students to become global leaders in multidisciplinary analysis, addressing environmental health, sustainability, and driving social transformation in the modern era. This highly interdisciplinary curriculum allows students to investigate diverse environmental themes, integrating principles, theories, and methodologies from natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Through research, students develop creative solutions while acquiring both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills to tackle urgent environmental issues and advocate for equitable ecological solutions. The B.A. program emphasizes cross-disciplinary learning, mandating foundational courses across multiple fields to foster an understanding of how social, cultural, and scientific frameworks intersect. Though it ensures scientific literacy, the degree provides ample flexibility, permitting students to choose ES electives and concentration courses from nearly all UCSB departments. Many students in this program aim to enhance their writing and communication abilities, preparing for careers that address complex social, political, and economic challenges through an interdisciplinary lens.
