Anthropology explores humanity from multiple perspectives: biological, sociocultural, and historical. At UCSB, many undergraduates choose this major for its comprehensive liberal arts foundation, regardless of whether they plan to pursue anthropology professionally. The program also thoroughly prepares students aiming for careers in the field.
The anthropology major has three primary objectives: (1) equipping students for graduate studies in anthropology, (2) preparing them for roles in secondary education or social work, and (3) offering behavioral science foundations for those seeking broad knowledge in biological or social sciences.
Those fascinated by contemporary societies often focus on cultural anthropology. Students drawn to human biology and evolutionary adaptations typically select biological anthropology. Archaeology appeals to those interested in ancient civilizations through both cultural and biological lenses. For a well-rounded approach, students may opt for the general major without specialization.
