The Performance Program in the Department of Music is dedicated to cultivating innovative, thoughtful, and enthusiastic interpretations of modern musical works. As Robert Erickson, one of our founding faculty composers, famously remarked, UC San Diego serves as a vibrant collective of artists.
Musicians engage dynamically within this collaborative space, working alongside both faculty and student composers while investigating novel performance techniques, digital music tools, spontaneous composition, and various other artistic inquiries. Modern music performance is approached as an inventive practice that harmonizes technical mastery with adventurous discovery.
Advanced performance students can pursue either a Master of Arts or Doctor of Musical Arts degree specializing in contemporary repertoire. Both academic paths involve completing core graduate seminars and receiving focused guidance from faculty mentors. Participants are urged to embrace an inquisitive, experimental mindset in their individual practice. Degree completion entails presenting two recitals and sharing original performance research findings.
