The M.A. program equips students with fundamental historical research skills while exposing them to key scholarly discussions and methodologies within specialized fields. This one-year program consists of nine four-unit courses in a primary area of study. While financial assistance isn't offered to Master's candidates, they can work as Readers for department courses. The Department grants M.A. degrees in European history, U.S. history, and History of Science, while also overseeing an interdisciplinary M.A. in Judaic Studies. Students may create customized M.A. tracks in subjects like African History, Medieval European History, or Pre-Modern Chinese History by submitting a proposal with faculty guidance. Those seeking an M.A. in Latin American Studies should apply through UCSD's Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies (CILAS). While specific requirements differ by field (detailed below), all courses must be completed for letter grades.
