The Ph.D. Program equips students for diverse careers in research and academia, with a strong focus on investigative work. Under advisor guidance, each student designs a customized course plan to prepare for both the Preliminary Qualifying Exam and dissertation research, adhering to established timelines for advancing to candidacy and degree completion. The NanoEngineering Ph.D. mandates choosing a specialization [Biomedical Nanotechnology, Molecular and Nanomaterials, or Nanotechnologies for Energy and the Environment] and completing 10 courses: 5 core requirements, 3 electives within the chosen focus, plus 2 electives from other focus areas, ENG-10X courses (covering team engineering, leadership, and entrepreneurship), or approved cross-departmental electives with advisor approval. Though the degree bears a single title - NanoEngineering - the specialization option ensures graduate curricula are personalized yet rigorous enough to provide comprehensive expertise in the chosen field.
