By integrating optical and electronic advancements, UCSD's photonics/opto-electronics initiative focuses on pushing communication, computing, imaging, sensing, and energy harvesting technologies beyond current limitations. Photonics is transforming diverse fields including telecommunications infrastructure, entertainment technology, computing sectors, and cutting-edge medical imaging and defense applications vital to America's technological leadership. UCSD's research approach is inherently cross-disciplinary, engaging materials scientists, device engineers, optical system designers, computer engineers, and networking experts. Numerous projects are conducted in partnership with industry leaders to facilitate practical implementation. Supported by robust funding and dedicated faculty, the program boasts world-class facilities for sophisticated optical analysis and nanoscale manufacturing. Currently, over 50 doctoral candidates and 10 postdoctoral scholars contribute to this dynamic research environment.
