At UCSD's Communication Department, we actively explore and reshape communication practices through social inquiry, integrating viewpoints, theories, and approaches from diverse fields like sociology, psychology, education, political science, anthropology, philosophy of science, history, media studies and production, computer science, cultural studies, and critical legal theory. Originating as an interdisciplinary undergraduate initiative supported by drama, political science, psychology, and sociology departments, our department gained independence in 1982 and launched a Ph.D. program in 1986. Our growth across traditional and emerging disciplines showcases our faculty's dedication to pioneering work that bridges disciplines, media formats, and societal settings. The graduate program merges two key traditions: critical communication research and empirical interdisciplinary scholarship. Studies focus on three core analytical viewpoints: communication as a societal influence, communication and culture, and communication's impact on individuals. Furthermore, the Department emphasizes that understanding communication demands a fusion of theory and practice, which is why we prioritize media practices.
