The Ph.D. Program is designed to equip students for diverse careers in academia and research, with a strong focus on investigative work. Typically, there are no mandatory courses. Each student works closely with their advisor to create a tailored curriculum that prepares them for both the Preliminary Qualifying Exam and their thesis project. These academic plans must adhere to the program's established timelines for advancing to candidacy and completing degree requirements. Doctoral candidates must successfully pass three key examinations: the Preliminary Qualifying Exam (recommended within 3-4 quarters of full-time study), the Ph.D. Qualifying Exam, and finally, the Dissertation Defense.
