Modern life sciences fundamentally rely on Genetics and Genomics. Approaches centered on genes and genomes play a crucial role in studying biological mechanisms, disease predisposition, and treatment responses. This Genetics and Genomics Research Area serves as a hub for students and faculty in Biomedical Sciences to explore these fields. Faculty researchers investigate diverse topics including genome-wide regulatory systems, disease gene discovery, complex trait genetics, gene expression processes, disease modeling through genetics, therapeutic gene applications, and related disciplines.
Coursework and training initiatives within this research area collaborate with UC San Diego's Genetics Training Program, uniting students and faculty from Biomedical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Neurosciences graduate programs along with partner institutions. The Genetics Training Program enrolls students after their first-year core curriculum, commencing specialized training in their second year. Biomedical Sciences students focusing on genetics are highly encouraged to join this cross-departmental initiative, which includes a weekly journal club promoting collaboration among genetics scholars throughout the La Jolla academic community.
