The Composition Program fosters the unique talents and abilities of student composers within a vibrant, diverse setting, prioritizing close faculty-student collaboration. Faculty mentors assess each student's aspirations and work to enhance their technical skills accordingly. The program's dynamic nature frequently inspires students to reconsider their artistic direction.
Following three seminar quarters and two juries, students gain insight into each faculty composer's approach, while faculty become familiar with individual student ambitions. At this stage, a primary mentor is selected, forming the core of the student's remaining degree work. The Third Year Forum showcases a piece composed by each advanced student during their final year, presented under department sponsorship. For this event, student composers must include a faculty performer on their PhD committee (either as a standard or sixth member) to serve as a performance advisor and liaison with performers. Additionally, the biweekly Focus on Composition Seminar features presentations by faculty, students, and guests, covering compositional, analytical, technological, and occasionally unconventional topics.
