The theatre program offers students a strong foundation in both artistic practice and academic study. Foundational courses in the early years provide essential skills and knowledge for specialized upper-level work. This curriculum caters to students desiring a comprehensive liberal arts education in theatre, as well as those aiming for graduate studies leading to MFA or PhD degrees. Upon declaring a theatre major, students should consult with the department's undergraduate advisor to develop a personalized study plan. Major requirements follow the catalog published during a first-year student's initial quarter at UC San Diego, while transfer students adhere to requirements from two years prior to their enrollment. Students in good academic standing can declare the major by submitting a Change of Major form to the Registrar's Office, with no department approval needed.
