The mathematics department provides an extensive selection of courses in both theoretical and practical mathematics, catering to its majors as well as students from other fields. Seven BS degree options are available: mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics-computer science, a combined mathematics and economics major, mathematics-scientific computation, mathematics-applied science with probability and statistics, along with one BA program in mathematics-secondary education. Students may also pursue minors in mathematics or mathematics education. An Honors Program is available for outstanding students across all eight majors. This program serves as strong preparation for those aiming to teach mathematics at the secondary level. Prospective students seeking a California teaching credential through UC San Diego should reach out to the Education Studies Program (EDS) for details on prerequisites and requirements. Early consultation with EDS is advised.
