UC San Diego's Ethnic Studies program explores interdisciplinary research on race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and nation through critical theoretical and political lenses. The department employs transnational, relational, and intersectional methodologies to examine power structures and inequality, incorporating knowledge systems from racialized and indigenous communities worldwide. Key research areas span cultural production and aesthetics, materialist analyses of labor and consumption, science and technology studies, as well as investigations into colonialism, migration, and displacement. Students benefit from distinguished faculty and highly qualified teaching assistants in a dynamic learning environment. The curriculum prepares undergraduates to: Undertake comparative race and ethnic studies research, Express sophisticated societal concepts clearly in writing and speech, Examine global power dynamics and inequality for international engagement, Understand the historical and cultural foundations of racial and social identities in diverse communities, Gain hands-on experience through artistic expression, community service, internships, and international study opportunities beyond traditional academic work.
