At UC San Diego, the Communication program explores how technologies and institutions—ranging from language and television to the Internet and emerging platforms—shape human interaction. This interdisciplinary field integrates insights from social sciences like anthropology, psychology, sociology, and political science, as well as humanities and arts such as theater, literature, and visual arts. Students gain a critical understanding of the communication dynamics influencing their daily lives. The Department of Communication provides an Honors Program for outstanding majors, offering the opportunity to graduate With Highest Distinction, With High Distinction, or With Distinction based on performance. Admission requires an application featuring: endorsement from a faculty advisor, a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and 3.5 major GPA, and a concise yet thorough proposal for a research or creative project.
