Welcome to the graduate studies program in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UC Riverside. Our department offers both theoretical and experimental research opportunities across diverse fields including Astrophysics, Biophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, Cosmology, Precision Measurement Science, High Energy Physics, Relativistic Heavy Ion and Nucleon Spin Physics, and Surface Physics. Students have access to research facilities both on our UCR campus and at leading national and international laboratories.
During UC Riverside's period of rapid growth, we've evolved into a premier physics department while preserving our commitment to supportive mentorship. Graduate education remains a central focus for our institution, enabling us to provide excellent financial assistance. Every incoming graduate student receives comprehensive support through fellowship and teaching assistant packages.
To be admitted to graduate status, the basic requirement is a bachelor's degree in Physics or its equivalent from an accredited institution. This degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent both in the distribution of academic subject matter and scholarship achievement comparable to that offered at the University of California. Qualified applicants are expected to have a junior/senior GPA of 3.25 or higher.
International applicants are also required to take the TOEFL examination as part of the pre-qualification process for financial support. The scores should be submitted directly from ETS and should have a test date no older than two years from the intended date of enrollment at UCR. Qualified applicants should have a minimum score of either 550 from the paper-based test or 80 from the internet based test (iBT). Ranges 540-550 / 75-80 may also be considered.
Deadline: January 5th
