The History Department acknowledges the legacy of racism and violence within our community, particularly targeting Black individuals and other people of color, and commends the courage of UCR students in confronting our faculty. To support our students, communities, and our commitment to self-examination, the History Department is dedicating time for thoughtful reflection and transformation. An action plan outlining specific measures will be published by the Department.
Ph.D. Program in History
Completion of at least two two-quarter graduate research seminars. Students who earn an MA in Public History at UCR may petition to waive one two-quarter research seminar.
A minimum of six reading seminars or comparable courses, selected from the student's areas of specialization
At least three courses approved by the graduate advisor to fulfill the teaching field requirement, with two required at the graduate level
All Ph.D. candidates must complete HIST 301, though this course does not contribute to unit requirements.
Course selections should be made in collaboration with the student's faculty advisor and graduate advisor, with appropriate options detailed in departmental guidelines. HIST 290 may count toward the above requirements only with graduate advisor approval.
Ph.D. Field Requirements Students develop expertise in three areas: a primary research field, a complementary field, and a teaching field. Available research fields are listed below, while complementary and teaching fields may be selected from these or from additional field options. Under exceptional circumstances, students may request to substitute the complementary field with a customized field developed with two faculty members who agree to oversee the written examination. Students cannot concentrate all three fields exclusively on one country or region.
