The Department of Statistics at UC Riverside boasts an exceptional reputation for excellence in Teaching, Research, and Consulting. As the sole institution in Southern California offering a PhD in Applied Statistics, our program focuses equally on statistical theory and its practical applications across various disciplines. Typically, students dedicate their initial 2-3 years to fulfilling coursework and comprehensive examination requirements, maintaining a minimum enrollment of 12 units (approximately three courses per quarter) until achieving candidacy status. Following successful completion of these requirements, students transition into dissertation research. The curriculum includes interdisciplinary coursework outside the department, known as the Substantive Field requirement, enabling students to build expertise for their research projects. These supplementary courses may be selected from diverse fields such as Biology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, or Business Administration, with potential specializations ranging from Population Genetics and Epidemiology to Educational Measurement and Environmental Sciences.
