Students choosing to major in Spanish enjoy diverse academic pathways and career prospects post-graduation. As a key component of the University's liberal arts and humanities offerings, our department's program equips students with critical thinking skills, effective oral and written communication abilities, and the capacity to view the world through multiple cultural lenses. Specifically, our Spanish major curriculum provides comprehensive understanding of Hispanic languages and cultures while developing language skills for both heritage speakers and new learners. Essentially, we ready students for either graduate studies in Spanish or immediate career entry with their undergraduate degree.
Our faculty's teaching and research expertise spans the vibrant spectrum of Hispanic and Portuguese influences on global literature and culture. From Cervantes and García Lorca's works in Spain to Sor Juana Inés and García Márquez's contributions in Latin America, from cinematic arts to indigenous media, poetry, and drama, we examine the connections between literature, history, and culture throughout the Hispanic world and its global impact.
Embracing cultural and intellectual diversity serves as the foundation of our Department's curriculum at every level, consequently equipping our graduates for professional paths in education, commerce, social services, healthcare, legal fields, international relations, media, and more.
