The Philosophy Department provides diverse course options for undergraduate students pursuing a major or minor in Philosophy or Philosophy/Law and Society. As a nationally recognized program at UC Riverside, our department embraces a truly pluralistic approach. We excel in various fields including analytic philosophy, 19th and 20th-century European thought, and philosophical history (particularly the 18th and 19th centuries).
For years, we've maintained global prominence in Agency Theory (Philosophy of Action) and 19th/20th Century Continental Philosophy, while also demonstrating expertise in Kantian studies, philosophy of mind and language, epistemology, analytic philosophy history, moral theory, legal philosophy, and philosophy of religion. Our department fosters significant cross-pollination between these specialties, with most faculty engaged in multiple research areas.
Our program uniquely combines contemporary analytic and European philosophical traditions with robust historical foundations, all without artificial divisions between these approaches. The Philosophy/Law and Society major equips students to analyze intricate connections between social institutions while preparing them for advanced studies at the intersection of law and philosophy. This curriculum offers excellent preparation for students considering legal education.
