Economics examines how societies distribute limited resources among consumers, businesses, governments, and nations. As a quantitative discipline, modern economic analysis demands strong mathematical and statistical skills. Economics graduates pursue careers across diverse fields including business, law, public policy, government, and international relations. The discipline also serves as excellent preparation for advanced degrees like MBAs, law degrees, and economics PhDs.

UCR's Economics department provides four specialized major options.

The Economics and Business Economics majors deliver comprehensive training in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory and their real-world applications. While both emphasize analytical rigor, the Economics major offers more elective flexibility, whereas Business Economics focuses more on practical business applications. Both prepare students for master's programs or careers as professional economists.
Two additional interdisciplinary majors are available. The Economics, Law and Society major integrates perspectives from multiple CHASS departments, providing broader legal understanding than traditional single-discipline approaches. This structured program fosters critical analysis of legal systems and social structures. The Economics/Administrative Studies major presents a rigorous CHASS-based alternative to Business Administration, with carefully designed interdisciplinary requirements.
The Economics/Law and Society major merges insights from various CHASS departments, giving students an expansive view of legal systems beyond conventional departmental boundaries. Its organized curriculum cultivates sophisticated understanding of legal frameworks and societal institutions.
