Economics explores how societies manage limited resources across consumer, corporate, governmental, and national activities. As a quantitative discipline, it demands strong mathematical and statistical skills. Economics graduates pursue diverse careers in business, law, public service, and global affairs, while also preparing for advanced degrees like MBAs, JDs, and economics PhDs.
UCR's Economics Department features four specialized programs.
The Economics and Business Economics majors provide deep theoretical training in microeconomics and macroeconomics, applying these principles to contemporary economic challenges. While both share core analytical rigor, the Economics major offers broader elective options, whereas Business Economics focuses more on practical business applications. Both pathways prepare students for graduate economics studies or professional economist roles.
Two additional interdisciplinary programs offer unique approaches. The Economics, Law and Society major integrates multiple CHASS perspectives, fostering comprehensive understanding of legal systems and social structures. Meanwhile, the Economics/Administrative Studies major presents a structured CHASS alternative to traditional business programs, combining diverse academic disciplines.
