Economics examines how societies manage limited resources across consumer, corporate, governmental, and national activities. As a quantitative discipline, it demands strong mathematical and statistical skills. Economics graduates pursue careers in various sectors including commerce, legal fields, public service, and global affairs. The subject also serves as excellent preparation for advanced studies like MBAs, law degrees, and doctoral programs in economics.
UCR's Economics department provides four specialized undergraduate programs.
The Economics and Business Economics majors deliver intensive theoretical training in microeconomics and macroeconomics, connecting principles to real-world economic challenges. While both share core requirements, the Economics major allows more elective flexibility, whereas Business Economics focuses more on practical business applications. Both pathways prepare students for master's-level economics studies or professional economist roles.
Two additional interdisciplinary programs are available. The Economics, Law and Society major integrates multiple CHASS department perspectives, giving students broader legal understanding than traditional single-discipline approaches. This program systematically develops analytical skills regarding legal systems and social structures. The Economics/Administrative Studies major offers a structured CHASS alternative to Business Administration, combining diverse academic perspectives.
