The UCLA Classics Department ranks among the nation's top ten humanities programs according to the latest National Research Council assessment. As the cornerstone of the humanities, Classics gave birth to numerous disciplines including philology, philosophy, political systems (such as democracy), theater arts, language studies, archaeological methods, and literary criticism. Our department maintains vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs, annually educating approximately 2,000 students in diverse elements of Greco-Roman civilization, from ancient texts and language study to material culture and historical analysis.
