The Synapses, Cells, and Circuits FAR examines nervous system function by connecting physiological processes across synaptic, cellular, and network levels. This research aims to comprehensively understand how synaptic activity, neuronal characteristics, and local circuit operations integrate to enable information processing throughout the brain. Recent decades have seen neuroscience uncover fundamental mechanisms of neuronal signaling and synaptic transmission. Neuroimaging advances have also improved our ability to map behavioral functions to specific brain regions. Yet connecting these physiological scales remains challenging technically, leaving significant gaps in our understanding. Addressing this will demand future researchers skilled in neuronal biology, synaptic function analysis, genetic methods, and advanced imaging technologies. With UCLA's extensive neuroscience capabilities, this FAR program is uniquely equipped to pioneer both research and education in this critical area.
