The Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical and Computer Engineering is a research-focused program that enables students to concentrate on a specific area within the field while contributing to groundbreaking discoveries. This advanced degree offers extensive possibilities for cross-disciplinary research and partnerships with various academic departments.
Candidates pursuing a Ph.D. must achieve several key academic benchmarks, ultimately leading to the completion of an original dissertation.
Our Department mandates that all doctoral candidates possess a Master of Science degree. While applicants aren't required to have this degree upon admission, they must obtain either an M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline before commencing their Ph.D. coursework. Students entering without an M.S. degree must dedicate their initial two years of graduate study to fulfilling this prerequisite.
Applicants interested in a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering are not required to have completed the master's degree in order to be considered for admission. Those admitted to the Ph.D. program without a master's degree are required to complete the UCLA M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering while proceeding toward the Ph.D. Applicants currently finishing a B.S. or an M.S. may apply for the Ph.D. Applicants without a master's degree may be considered for the M.S. if not recommended for the Ph.D. To be considered for admission, Ph.D. applicants should have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 tio be competitive.
IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0 is the minimum required.
TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test.
