On behalf of our faculty and team, we extend a warm welcome to the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department within UCLA's Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science.
This is an exciting era for chemical and biomolecular engineering, as our discipline stands ready to address the world's most urgent challenges, particularly in energy, environmental sustainability, and medical advancements.
Chemical engineering has historically served as the intersection of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Pioneering chemical engineers sparked the first wave of technological innovation in chemical processes during the early 1900s. For instance, the Haber-Bosch method, developed by German engineers in the 1900s for synthetic nitrogen fixation, resolved global food scarcity issues in the early 20th century and supported population growth from 1 to 7 billion. This groundbreaking technique remains in use today for manufacturing agricultural fertilizers and
Applicants are expected to complete a bachelor's degree in a field that provides the student with at least two years of preparation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering.
