The University of California, Los Angeles stands among the world's premier research universities. Featuring top-tier engineering and medical schools alongside numerous distinguished academic programs, UCLA provides an exceptional setting for interdisciplinary biomedical research. UCLA's bioengineering field first gained prominence during the 1970s through pioneering work in medical implants and imaging technologies. Established two decades ago, the Bioengineering Department has cultivated outstanding research and educational initiatives. Our academic focus spans five key areas: molecular/cellular/tissue engineering, biomedical devices and instrumentation, medical imaging, biomedical data science, and neural engineering. With 14 core faculty members currently, we're actively expanding our team by recruiting exceptional new talent. The department also benefits from the collective expertise of 28 joint faculty, 77 affiliated faculty, and 4 adjunct faculty across engineering, medicine, physical sciences, life sciences, and industry. We actively foster cross-disciplinary partnerships throughout UCLA's academic community to advance biomedical engineering research and education.
Applicants should have a B.S. degree or its equivalent, with a grade point average in the final two years of not less than 3.00, in engineering, life science, or physical science. Admission to the Ph.D. program is granted to a small group each year, according to the following criteria: (1) Evidence of capacity for original scholarship and research in the field of Biomedical Engineering; (2) outstanding GRE scores and references; and (3) demonstration of adequate communication skills, particularly in writing, in the work submitted.
Applicants whose native language is not English must score at least 600 on the paper and pencil Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, or 100 on the internet-based TOEFL, or receive an overall band score of 8.0 on the International English Testing System (IELTS) examination to be considered for admission.
