Mechanical engineering is a diverse field that plays a role in nearly every industry and manufactured item. Mechanical engineers utilize principles of mechanics, dynamics, and energy transfer to create, evaluate, test, and produce both consumer and industrial goods. They typically possess expertise in areas such as design, materials, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, dynamics, control systems, manufacturing techniques, and human factors. This discipline involves designing machinery for manufacturing and processing sectors, mechanical parts for electronic and data processing devices, engines and power generation equipment, components and vehicles for terrestrial, marine, aerial, and space applications, and artificial body parts. Mechanical engineers work across the engineering field as independent consultants in small firms offering specialized products or services, as designers and managers in large companies, and as public servants in government agencies.

Mechanical engineers specializing in Power Systems and Thermal Design focus on energy usage and thermal environment management. A key responsibility is designing power and propulsion systems, such as power plants and engines, along with their components. Managing thermal environments involves creating thermal control systems that incorporate heat pumps, heat pipes, heat exchangers, thermal insulation, and ablation heat shields. Additionally, mechanical engineers contribute to fields like heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), vacuum technology, cryogenics, and solar thermal energy.
