The Computer Science Department is committed to achieving excellence by developing, implementing, and sharing knowledge in computer science and engineering. This is accomplished through robust academic programs, collaborative research with industry and government partners, scholarly publications, and active involvement with professional organizations and communities at local, state, and national levels.
Students can pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in either Computer Science (CS) or Computer Science and Engineering (CS&E). While both programs provide a solid computer science foundation, the CS&E program specifically caters to students interested in computer hardware systems. Both CS and CS&E programs hold accreditation from ABET's Computing Accreditation Commission, with the CS&E program also accredited by ABET's Engineering Accreditation Commission.
The Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science programs are all capstone majors. CS&E students undertake a comprehensive product design course, while CS students complete either a software engineering or major product design course. Graduates will be equipped to: apply fundamental mathematical and scientific principles in computing, design software or hardware systems within practical constraints, collaborate effectively in teams, address computer-related engineering challenges, and communicate proficiently.
To be considered for admission to UCLA, international students must have completed secondary school with a superior average in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion which enables the student to be admitted to a university in the home country.
English language proficiency is critical to your success at UCLA. Applicants, whose first language, or language of instruction for at least the last three years, is not English, are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS).
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A competitive score is above 100 (with sub-scores above 22)
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A competitive score is 7 or higher.
