Physics serves as a fundamental scientific discipline focused on uncovering nature's governing principles. It offers insights into the workings of our physical environment. From exploring cosmic phenomena to examining subatomic particles and intricate molecular structures, all fall within the scope of physics. Given its comprehensive nature, physics forms the basis for all other scientific fields. UCLA's Physics & Astronomy department features prominent specialties such as Condensed Matter Physics, Particle Physics, Plasma Physics, Nuclear Physics, AMO Physics, Accelerator Physics, Biophysics, and Astrophysics. The department provides four distinct undergraduate degree paths. Bachelor of Science in Physics. This program equips students with thorough training in fundamental physics principles through both theoretical coursework and hands-on laboratory experience. Bachelor of Arts in Physics. Designed for students seeking substantial physics knowledge while maintaining flexibility to explore other disciplines, this track appeals particularly to those pursuing double majors or science education careers. Bachelor of Science in Biophysics. Combining physics education with molecular biology studies, this major fosters interdisciplinary understanding crucial for investigating complex biological systems at molecular levels—a rapidly growing research frontier. Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and Astrophysics. This field applies physical laws to cosmic phenomena, addressing fundamental questions about the universe's nature, function, origins, and development. Students gain analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, deep physical understanding, mathematical proficiency, and technical expertise with scientific instrumentation and computing. Physics graduates enjoy diverse career opportunities spanning academic, government, and industrial research; engineering; education; and technology development. Many alumni successfully enter medical or legal professions, while others thrive in finance, management, entertainment, and public service sectors.
