Those enrolled in the Spanish and Linguistics Major or Minor develop advanced proficiency in Spanish by examining contemporary linguistic principles. Courses with a linguistics emphasis offer insights into Spanish's mechanics, its historical evolution, and its regional, contextual, and social variations.
This interdisciplinary BA program, a collaboration between UCLA's Spanish & Portuguese and Linguistics departments, centers on studies of Spanish pronunciation (phonetics and phonology), historical development (historical linguistics), and grammatical framework (syntax). Learners demonstrate their expertise by designing and completing an original research project focused on spoken Spanish, particularly Latin American Spanish, Chicano Spanish, or Los Angeles Spanish dialects. The Spanish Linguistics Minor is also available to students from all majors seeking to enhance their Spanish language understanding.
