The study of Portuguese and Brazilian cultures opens doors to the Lusophone community, spanning more than 270 million individuals across five continents. As the world's sixth most spoken language, Portuguese extends beyond Portugal to nations like Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Macau, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Mozambique. It serves as the official tongue of Brazil, a major global economy experiencing rapid growth. Learning Portuguese equips students with linguistic skills increasingly vital for business, diplomacy, global affairs, and cultural exchange.
Our Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies emphasizes creative writing, social consciousness, and visual arts across various regions. The program cultivates proficiency in both written and spoken Portuguese while fostering deep cultural understanding of Lusophone societies. Students can pursue independent research and internship opportunities through partnerships with UCLA's Center for Brazilian Studies and Brazil's Los Angeles Consulate General.
