The UCLA Department of Classics stands among the top three Humanities departments at UCLA, consistently ranking in the national top ten according to the most recent National Research Council assessment. As the cornerstone of the Humanities, Classics serves as the birthplace for numerous disciplines including philology, philosophy, political systems (such as democracy), theater arts, linguistics, archaeology, literary criticism, and more.
Our department offers comprehensive programs for both undergraduate and graduate students, engaging approximately 2,000 undergraduates annually through courses exploring Greek and Roman civilization, literature, language studies, archaeological methods, and historical perspectives.
Our faculty comprises accomplished scholars from diverse backgrounds, with many at the peak of their careers, representing the full spectrum of classical studies. Traditional strengths in Classical philology, paleography, Classical linguistics, Byzantine studies, and medieval Latin have been enhanced by emerging specializations in Greek/Mediterranean archaeology, Indo-European linguistics, ancient/medieval philosophy (particularly Greek traditions), political theory of ancient Greece, gender and sexuality studies in antiquity, and Neo-Latin/Renaissance scholarship. Notably, we maintain the highest representation of women faculty among comparable Classics departments at leading research institutions.
