The UCLA Department of Classics stands among the top three Humanities departments at UCLA, consistently ranking in the national top ten according to the latest National Research Council assessment. As the cornerstone of the Humanities, Classics gave rise to numerous disciplines including philology, philosophy, political systems (such as democracy), theater arts, linguistics, archaeology, literary criticism, and more.
Our department offers comprehensive programs for both undergraduate and graduate students, engaging approximately 2,000 undergraduates annually through courses exploring Greek and Roman civilization, literature, language studies, archaeology, and historical research.
Our faculty comprises distinguished scholars from diverse backgrounds, primarily at mid-career stages, whose specialties cover the breadth of classical studies. Traditional strengths in Classical philology, paleography, Classical linguistics, Byzantine studies, and medieval Latin have been enhanced by emerging expertise in Greek/Mediterranean archaeology, Indo-European linguistics, ancient/medieval philosophy (especially Greek thought), Greek political theory, gender/sexuality studies in antiquity, and Neo-Latin/Renaissance scholarship. Notably, we boast the highest representation of women faculty among comparable Classics departments at leading research institutions.
