The UCI School of Medicine provides advanced graduate education culminating in a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. Five core basic science departments prepare students for research-focused careers in academia, biotech, and allied industries through rigorous biomedical training and analytical thinking. Admission to Ph.D. programs primarily occurs through the UCI Gateway Programs (CMB and INP), with direct entry considered individually. Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) participants can also choose to complete their Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. The School delivers graduate education across diverse basic science and clinical disciplines, awarding both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Prospective students should contact program-specific graduate advisors for detailed information. While departmental specialization is common, all medical school resources and courses remain accessible to every graduate student. Cross-disciplinary learning and investigation are actively promoted. Standard completion times are two years for master's degrees and five years for doctorates, with no master's prerequisite for Ph.D. candidates. Admissions committees assess applicants based on research background, recommendation letters, academic performance, and other pertinent credentials, with Graduate Record Examination scores no longer mandated. Prospective students should identify departments aligning with their academic goals and experience. The Biomedical Sciences Master's degree offers two completion paths: a research thesis (Plan I) or coursework with a comprehensive examination (Plan II).
