The Music Department's curriculum blends conservatory-style training with academic rigor. Our instructors emphasize musical performance and composition while maintaining excellence in historical, aesthetic, and theoretical research.
Our distinguished faculty comprises active composers, music historians, theorists, conductors, and performers who regularly publish scholarly works, perform in concerts, record albums, and create acclaimed compositions. Numerous instrumental teachers come from prestigious Southern California orchestras like the LA Philharmonic, LA Chamber Orchestra, and Pacific Symphony. The department regularly hosts performances and masterclasses by world-famous visiting artists and boasts cutting-edge music technology facilities.
Admission (in all emphases except Musicology)
Applicants should hold a B.A. in Music, a B.Mus., or the equivalent. Applicants are expected to have good general knowledge of music history and music theory, competence in basic musicianship skills, including sight-singing, written and keyboard harmony, dictation, and basic keyboard facility (including sight-reading). Entering students will be given diagnostic tests in music theory prior to the beginning of classes and will be advised to remedy any evident deficiencies during the first year in residence by registering for the appropriate undergraduate courses or through other appropriate means. Credit earned in such courses cannot be counted toward fulfillment of any degree requirement.
Admission (Emphasis in Musicology)
Applicants should hold a B.A. degree in Music, a B.Mus. degree, or their equivalent.
Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
