The MFA Programs in Writing at UC Irvine focus on developing skilled writers committed to a lifelong writing practice. The program seeks students who demonstrate meticulous dedication, strong personal integrity, and enduring perseverance. Its ultimate aspiration is for every student to eventually produce enduring literary work. To support this goal, the program maintains limited enrollment to preserve exceptional standards, enable personalized mentorship, and encourage regular collaboration between students and faculty. Fiction and poetry workshops form the foundation of this two-to-three-year curriculum. Each year, the program selects no more than twelve new students from over five hundred applicants. Successful candidates earn a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in English upon completion.
