Led by a globally renowned faculty, the Graduate Program delivers a challenging, cross-disciplinary environment for visual arts education. The three-year MFA curriculum includes required and elective courses in creative practice, theoretical studies, and current artistic discourse. Students can further enrich their education by enrolling in classes across other departments at UCI, leveraging the university's reputation as a top-tier research institution. With faculty guidance, seminar discussions, and frequent peer evaluations, the Department of Art creates an ideal intellectual space for nurturing both artistic innovation and critical thinking. Alongside professors committed to deepening students' engagement with visual culture, graduate candidates benefit from interactions with visiting artists through lectures, studio critiques, and specialized discussions.

This MFA program offers comprehensive professional preparation for those pursuing careers in contemporary art. It encourages innovative, cross-disciplinary artistic methods while establishing strong foundations in traditional mediums and emerging practices. The rigorous academic path blends seminar-style learning, in-depth critique sessions, and self-directed research.

In the initial two years, students complete a 12-unit quarterly course load from a structured curriculum. They may then choose supplementary coursework from any department or approved upper-level undergraduate offerings. The final year focuses primarily on thesis exhibition development, with concentrated mentorship from a select faculty committee.
