The Master of Arts in European Thought and Culture (ETC), offered by the Department of European Languages and Studies within the School of Humanities, leverages faculty expertise across Humanities and Social Sciences departments to deliver an interdisciplinary curriculum. This program offers students an intensive exploration of Europe's philosophical foundations and cultural works—spanning literature and the arts from the Middle Ages to modernity—while situating them within their historical frameworks. Students can enter through two pathways: (1) Bachelor's degree holders may apply to the standalone one-year program, completing nine courses plus either a comprehensive exam or thesis. (2) High-achieving UC Irvine undergraduates can apply during their final year, starting with three Core Seminars as seniors before finishing their nine courses and exam/thesis requirement in a fifth year.
This program equips students to analyze and critique cultural works (literature, arts) and philosophical texts (including political theory, science history, and theology) from Europe's intellectual heritage. Its threefold focus includes: (1) close reading of expressive forms and languages, (2) contextualizing ideas within social, economic, political, or cultural frameworks, and (3) examining pivotal texts that shaped modern critical theory. Special attention is given to how this tradition evolves—both through contemporary literary/critical theory and through colonial, postcolonial, and global perspectives beyond Europe.
