Exceptional students looking to integrate legal studies with advanced degrees in the ECE program can participate in dual-degree studies through UC Irvine's Program in Law and Graduate Studies (PLGS). This initiative enables participants to follow a structured academic path, earning a J.D. from the School of Law alongside either a Master's or Ph.D. in the ECE program. The Department provides M.S. and Ph.D. options in Electrical and Computer Engineering, with specializations available in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. Since many graduate courses aren't offered every term, students are strongly encouraged to start their graduate studies during the fall quarter.Through PLGS, UC Irvine students have the opportunity to simultaneously pursue a Law School J.D. and a master's or doctoral degree in nearly any graduate program at UCI.As one of the most comprehensive programs of its type, PLGS provides exceptional flexibility—allowing students to merge legal education with research-based graduate degrees in fields ranging from humanities and social sciences to life sciences, information technology, physical sciences, and engineering, or with professional graduate degrees in business, urban planning, education, and public health. Established to foster interdisciplinary legal education, PLGS also helps students complete both a J.D. and an M.A., M.B.A., M.S., M.P.H., or Ph.D. more efficiently than pursuing the degrees independently. The standard completion timeline is four years for J.D./Master's and J.D./M.B.A. combinations, and seven years for J.D./Ph.D. pairings.
