Sociology explores the examination of human societies and social groups. It analyzes both collaborative and conflicting social dynamics, disparities, and how families, communities, workplaces, and nations are socially structured. UCI's program offers a comprehensive overview of the field while enabling students to engage in independent research, join an Honors Program, and explore departmental focus areas like business, economics, diversity, global sociology, and public policy. Foundational coursework includes social institutions, theory, and research methods, followed by specialized classes in areas like racial and ethnic studies, gender sociology, or political sociology. These courses are enhanced by faculty research on subjects such as immigrant work-family dynamics in the U.S., economic shifts in Asia, gender relations across social classes and ethnicities, and perspectives on sexual behavior.
