The UCI School of Medicine provides advanced education culminating in a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. Five core basic science departments prepare students for research-focused careers in academia, biotech, and allied industries through rigorous training in biomedical investigation and analytical thinking. Admission to Ph.D. programs primarily occurs through the UCI Gateway Programs (CMB and INP), with direct entry considered under special circumstances. Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) participants may also choose to complete their Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. The School offers diverse graduate programs across basic and clinical disciplines, awarding both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Each department features a graduate advisor to provide program-specific guidance. While students typically train within a single department, they have access to all School of Medicine resources and curricula. Cross-disciplinary learning and research are strongly supported. Standard completion times are two years for master's candidates and five years for doctoral students, with no master's requirement for Ph.D. enrollment. Admission decisions consider applicants' research background, recommendation letters, academic performance, and other relevant credentials, with Graduate Record Examination scores no longer mandated. Prospective students should identify departments aligning with their academic goals and may adjust faculty advisors as their research focus evolves. Regular consultation with faculty mentors is recommended for academic and research planning.
