Mathematical physics bridges physics and mathematics, employing abstract mathematical concepts to rigorously address unresolved problems in physics. The Math Physics group at UCI tackles diverse analytical and probability challenges originating from physics, spanning electromagnetic theory in complex media (both linear and nonlinear), statistical mechanics, and solid-state physics (including random and quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators).
The team currently consists of three permanent faculty members alongside outstanding graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and visiting scholars. Notably, Charles Newman, a distinguished statistical mechanics expert from the Courant Institute, will join UCI's faculty in 2012/2013. The group maintains robust collaborations with UCI's Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems group as well as the Probability group. Additionally, it regularly hosts visiting scholars from leading global research institutions.
