The Cognitive Sciences Department provides a Ph.D. program designed to train students for academic, corporate, and public sector careers in research and education. Recognized globally as a premier hub for mathematically focused cognitive science research, the program emphasizes cutting-edge experimental and theoretical approaches to studying human cognition and brain function. Students gain practical research experience while developing advanced mathematical and computational competencies. The program features three specialized pathways: Cognitive Sciences, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Statistics, each culminating in a unique Master's degree.
Faculty members include two National Academy of Sciences scholars, with many holding editorial positions in top journals, leadership roles in international societies, and advisory positions at major funding agencies like NSF and NIH. The department maintains strong interdisciplinary connections with Biomedical Engineering, Logic and Philosophy of Science, Computer Science, Neurobiology and Behavior, and Statistics. Numerous faculty participate in UCI research centers including the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences, Data Science Institute, FIBRE imaging facility, and centers focused on hearing research and memory neuroscience.
