The Chemistry Department provides both M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. The Ph.D. is awarded based on demonstrating comprehensive understanding of modern chemistry's principles and theories, along with the capability to conduct independent research, evidenced by an approved doctoral dissertation. For the M.S., students can choose between submitting a qualifying Master's thesis (Plan I) or completing designated graduate coursework followed by an oral comprehensive exam (Plan II). Note that a Master's degree is not required for Ph.D. program admission.

Qualification Requirements
All applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California
- Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
TOEFL Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:
- On the TOEFL iBT minimum score of 80
- For the paper-based test, a minimum score of 550
IELTS Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:
- An overall minimum score of 7 for admission, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module.
- Applicants who qualify for admission by the above criteria, and also achieve a score of 8 or higher on the Speaking module may be eligible to serve as a Teaching Assistant.
