This graduate focus area encompasses research across structural biology, bioinformatics, ion channels, membrane transport, metallobiochemistry, optical biology, crystallography, and protein folding. Research teams in this specialization employ high-resolution methods to explore molecular mechanisms, utilizing diverse biophysical approaches.

Cutting-edge equipment supports structural biology and molecular biophysics investigations. Facilities feature a Rigaku 007 rotating anode CCD system for x-ray crystallography, up-to-date crystallographic and modeling software, and synchrotron x-ray access. Collaborative projects can utilize crystallization robots. Labs are equipped with advanced 3D-graphics workstations, computing servers, and campus-wide computational resources. The UCI Biomolecular NMR center houses a Varian Inova 800 MHz NMR spectrometer capable of analyzing liquid, semi-solid, and solid-state samples. A dedicated spectroscopy room contains a Biacore 3000 (SPR) instrument for university-wide use. Additional resources include atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), a Jasco J-720 CD spectropolarimeter, MSC isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC), Microcal VP-DSC scanning calorimeter, and differential scanning fluorimetry (DSF).

Qualification Requirements

Applicants should have a good background in biology, physics, and chemistry. The ideal preparation includes introductory as well as some advanced courses in biology (cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, and molecular biology), biochemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, calculus, statistics, and physics. Demonstrated experience in laboratory research is essential.
Admission decisions are made on the basis of an overall evaluation of an applicant's preparation and potential to complete a rigorous program of advanced study in biology. Particular attention is paid to the applicant's academic experience, motivation and potential for research. The latter should be documented by reference letters from individuals in positions to judge research potential. Evaluations are based on the applicant's academic record, Graduate Record Examination scores, prior laboratory research experience, letters of recommendation, and the two essays in the online application. Applications may be submitted electronically through the Grad Division.
One copy of all postsecondary academic transcripts
Three letters of recommendation
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general tests
TOEFL iBT minimum score of 80 with 26 in the speaking test.
IELTS - An overall minimum score of 7.0 for admission, with a score of no less than 6.0 on any individual module.
Hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California
Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
