The Chemistry Honors Program is a specialized research initiative available to qualified Chemistry majors in their senior year. Candidates must maintain a minimum 3.3 GPA both overall and in Chemistry courses by the end of their junior year. Additionally, they need to show research potential worthy of honors distinction, as evaluated by their faculty research advisor. Participants take Honors Research in Chemistry (CHEM H180A-CHEM H180B-CHEM H180C) throughout their final year and submit a comprehensive thesis in spring quarter. They also participate in the Honors Seminar (CHEM H181W), which provides scientific writing training and requires a formal research presentation. Completing CHEM H181W fulfills UCI's upper-division writing requirement. IMPORTANT: Honors Research participants (CHEM H180A-CHEM H180B-CHEM H180C) are exempt from taking CHEM 180 (Undergraduate Research).
Graduates who meet all requirements, maintain the required GPA, and produce honors-level research will earn Departmental Honors in Chemistry.
