The Spanish major equips students with comprehensive knowledge in literature, linguistics, visual arts, and educational approaches within Spanish-speaking populations worldwide. Learners enhance their Spanish language abilities in listening, reading, speaking, and writing while developing analytical skills, sociocultural understanding, and cross-cultural capabilities essential for diverse career paths. For those pursuing interdisciplinary studies, the B.A. in Spanish offers flexibility to combine with another major, especially beneficial for future educators in K-12 and bilingual programs. The curriculum includes five required foundational courses and seven electives. Graduates will achieve these key competencies:
Effectively communicate ideas and perspectives in Spanish through both speech and writing, demonstrating mastery of grammar, tone, and stylistic elements.
Critically examine literary and cinematic creations from Hispanic artists, recognizing their historical and sociocultural significance.
Recognize and explain linguistic characteristics (such as phonetics, syntax, and language acquisition) across different Spanish-speaking regions and social contexts.
Compare and contrast cultural traditions and diverse viewpoints from various Hispanic communities, including those in Spain, Latin America, and the United States.
Student must have completed secondary school with excellent grades/marks in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion that enables you to be admitted to a university in your home country and is equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma. Various examinations and scores may be used to demonstrate proficiency in English: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination: Internet-based test (IBT): score 80 or higher; Score 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); Freshman applicants may complete one UC approved English composition course.
